THE CLAIMANTS DEFEND THEMSELVES

 How do the producers defend themselves against the avalanche of criticism? It’s so, so typical. On the Today show, Jacobovici and Cameron were finally pressed to respond to critics such as Zias. They quickly fell back on the laughable concept that they weren’t – surprise – experts. Both said they were not archaeologists. One insisted he was a film-maker, the other a journalist. Cameron found it “compelling” as a layman.

In other words, neither has credibility.

Ben Witherington, Asbury Theological Seminary professor comments: "So my response to this is clear--- James Cameron, the producer of the movie Titantic, has now jumped on board another sinking ship full of holes, presumably in order to make a lot of money before the theory sinks into an early watery grave. Man the lifeboats and get out now."

AND WHAT ABOUT THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL?

 But, wait a minute… Isn’t their documentary being aired by the nonfiction Discovery Channel?

 The press releases of the Discovery Channel boast that the parent company, Discovery Communications, is the “number one nonfiction media company.”

 That definition is now in shambles. You can crumple up the paper it’s printed on and throw it away.

 But, I hear someone say, Surely  the folks at Discovery  would not peddle sensational fiction? Or money-making gimmicks dressed up as journalism… would they?

 So is this really the archeology of Jesus Christ? Okay, I think you know the answer now.

CBS News correspondent Mark Philips reports “the archeological establishment has lined up to label this claim as bunk. This is the second time The Discovery Channel has been involved in a disputed claim about an ancient tomb,” reports Phillips. The man at the center of the previous case [the James Ossuary] is now facing trial for forgery.”

 When it comes to ancient Christian sites, the Discovery Channel already has a huge credibility problem on its hands. Discovery aired a 2002 special on the alleged “ossuary of James”, which was declared a forgery in 2003 by the Israel Antiquities Authority. Its promoter, Oded Golan, is currently on trial for forging part of the inscription. Jacobovici (the man producing this “Jesus Tomb” documentary) produced that badly flawed documentary too.

 And something else. Were you aware that the Discovery Channel, like most of the national TV elite, display a dramatic bias in target selection when it comes to religion? There are no controversies over the historic claims of Islam, Judaism, or any other religious faith.

But Christianity is another story. It is routinely the subject of sensational TV exposes, complete with breathless claims about how Jesus “might be” the son of a Roman soldier, or he might have survived the crucifixion without dying. And now he’s a dad, with kids.

Have you noticed? In recent years there had been a huge interest  in trying to discredit Christianity.

Take the Dan Brown novel - The Da Vinci Code - as an example. It seems that Cameron is following a similar agenda.

Despite advances in technology, we live in an age where there is a lot of uncertainty. Many are turning to the Bible, while others are trying to discredit it.

But before we get carried away by Cameron’s sensational claim, let’s look at the facts:

Cameron’s claim has the flavor of Dan Brown’s book The Da Vinci Code. And what was the secret of its enormous success? It was largely due to Brown’s  leveraging some facts into a gigantic stretch of the imagination. So The Da Vinci Code set records in the bookstores and also became an international movie blockbuster.

However, once scholars had a chance to plow through Brown’s claims, (Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married, the New Testament was rewritten, and Constantine invented Jesus’ divinity) his theories proved to be spurious scholarship, judged by historians as mere hype to sell books and movie tickets.

Was this really the archeology of Jesus Christ? Not a hope.

But it was a great seller.

Now ask yourself this: Why did Jacobovici and Cameron wait until just prior to Easter to launch both the book and documentary?

Amos Kloner, the first archaeologist to examine the site, said the idea fails to hold up by archaeological standards but makes for profitable television. “They just want to get money for it,” Kloner said.

You can stake your life on it. Film-maker James Cameron's claims that the box believed to have contained the bones of Jesus has been found is not only pure fiction – but a clever  publicity stunt.

So are we talking about the real archeology of Jesus Christ? Where are the bones of Jesus Christ? What happened to Jesus after his death?

OTHER TOMB SITES CLAIMED

Of course, Cameron and Jacobovici are not the only claimants to “inside information” about the location of Jesus” tomb.  It has also been claimed to be in India – and even in China.  

In India?

So called experts would have us believe they have discovered Jesus’ tomb in India - in Srinagar, Kashmir, India, to be precise. Among other “evidence” cited is this:

“The Tomb of Yus Asaph is a fascinating site. The tomb is said to be that of a Prophet who came from a foreign land. His parables, teachings, and burial direction all suggest he was Jesus Christ.”

In Japan?

Jesus’ tomb is also in the Shingo Village (Herai) in Japan.  Here is some “solid” evidence:

“In 1935, Kiyomaro Takeuchi discovered a 1900 year old document stored in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan, containing evidence Jesus (Joshua) born in Bethlehem to Virgin Mary is buried in Herai Village in Aomori district of Japan….The document was SO authentic and new, and so explosive at the time that the Japanese government banned the document from public view and locked it in a museum in Tokyo.”

So where is it?

RESURRECTION - A FANTASTIC CLAIM

When my neighbour told me she had just been reading the early Christian reports of Jesus’ resurrection, I had a question for her.

I had also been researching the topic. Here was the question:

“Did you notice how all the first witnesses to the resurrection run. Half the references in the Gospels to people running occur in the Resurrection stories: the women run from the tomb, Peter and John run to the tomb, the disciple in Emmaus hurry back to Jerusalem.

WAS THE RESURRECTION IMPORTANT?

Well, it sure mattered to Jesus’ followers.

·          Luke tells us right off the bat that as soon as the women entered the tomb, “they did not find the body.”

·          Likewise, when Peter entered the tomb, “he saw the linen cloths by themselves.”

·          Both the women and Peter were shocked and amazed. They were shocked and amazed precisely because the tomb was empty of Jesus’ body.

Now think about this. The only reason the resurrection of Jesus filled the first disciples with amazement, shock and great joy is that they believed his body had been raised. In Luke's account of the empty tomb and resurrection appearances, he keeps making this same point.

On the Emmaus road, Jesus appears to the disciples and walks and talks with them.

When the risen Jesus appears to the other disciples, he says explicitly, “Look at my hands and my feet…Touch me and see; for a ghost does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have.

 “Then just to be sure no one has missed the point, Jesus asks, “Have you anything here to eat?” Luke tells us, “They gave him a piece of broiled fish, and he took it and ate in their presence.”

Even modern scholars who deny that Jesus was raised bodily from the dead, admit that all the early Christians thought he had been, and that they made it the basis of their whole lives, the content of their proclamation, the reason for their hope, the energy behind their faith.

Paul puts it starkly: “If Jesus' body was not raised from the grave…there is no good news to share…no faith…no hope and no Christianity.”

Make no bones about it. It was the early Christians’ belief in Jesus’ physical resurrection that filled them with faith, and sent them out into the world with the good news of God's healing love.

That was the good news that put all other good news to shame. It put a lilt back in their stride, hope in their hearts and energy in to their ministry.

The time-honored, multi-faceted evidence for the Gospel data of the Deity, death, and bodily resurrection of Jesus are more convincing than ever. Even the early opponents of the Christian message acknowledged that Jesus' tomb was empty. And the evidence for Jesus' bodily resurrection appearances has never been refuted.

No bones about it.
