JESUS’ RESURRECTION:
HISTORY OR HOAX?

Two bright young men — avowed skeptics — went up to Oxford. One was the eminent Gilbert West, and the other was Lord Lyttleton, the famous English journalist.

These two men agreed that Christianity must be destroyed. They also agreed that to destroy it, two things were necessary:

1. They must prove that Jesus never rose from the tomb.

2. They must prove that Saul of Tarsus, the killer, was never converted to Christianity.

Now they divided the task between them, West assuming the responsibility for the RESURRECTION, and Lyttleton and his great mind, caring for the EXPERIENCE OF SAUL on the Damascus road.

They were to give themselves plenty of time - twelve months or more, if necessary.

Now back to our theme... What really happened to Jesus after his death?

May I say that after years of investigation, I have come to the conviction that the resurrection of Jesus Christ is one of the most despicable, vicious, heartless hoaxes ever thrust upon the minds of men – or it is the most amazing and wonderful fact of history.

But which?

If it's a hoax, then Goodbye Christianity! Full stop.

If you didn't know, Jesus' resurrection and Christianity stand or fall together. It’s as simple as that. Without the resurrection of Jesus, there is no basis for Christianity.

All of the major world religions except four are based on mere philosophical propositions. The other four (Judaism, Buddhism, Islam and Christianity) are based, instead, on personalities. Of these four, only Christianity claims an empty tomb for its “resurrected” founder.

Christianity stands or falls on the resurrection

Christianity stands or falls on whether Jesus Christ rose from the dead. If this goes, then all that is essential and vital in Christianity goes.

Indeed, even the early Christian apostle Paul (who had been an ardent skeptic) acknowledged this:

“If Christ is not risen from the dead, then your faith is in vain.” (1 Corinthians 15:17)

You see, Jesus Christ openly declared himself to be the Son of God, and His rising from the dead would be essential to the truth of that declaration.

He calmly professed to stake his entire claims upon his ability, after having been done to death, to rise again from the grave. He claimed that that was his single and sufficient credential. It was “the sign” to authenticate his claims. (Matthew 12:38-40; 16:21; 17:9; 17:22,23; 20:18,19; 26:32; 27:63. Mark 8:31 – 9:1; 9:10; 9:31; 10:32-34; 14:28,58. Luke 9:22-27. John 2:18-22; 12:34; chs. 14-16.)

When Jesus said that he himself would personally rise from the dead on the third day after he was crucified, he said something that only a fool would say, if he expected to retain the loyalty of his followers – unless he was certain he was going to rise.

Disprove Jesus’ resurrection, and you have disposed of Christianity.

The claim that Jesus has risen from the dead is the bold claim that turned the world upside down in the first century – that lifted Christianity pre-eminently above all other religions.

Christianity is a religion which claims to be based on the facts of history. It claims that the Creator has taken the risk of involving Himself in human affairs – and that the facts are there for you to examine with the utmost rigour.

Anyway, they met again as planned. Each was a little sheepish, as he approached the other. Each was apprehensive of what the other’s reaction would be.

For when they compared notes, it was realized that they had both come independently to disturbing conclusions. West had found the evidence pointed unmistakably to the fact that Jesus did rise from the dead. Lyttleton had found, on examination, that Saul of Tarsus did become a radically new man, through his conversion to Christianity.

Both men had become, in the process, strong and devoted followers of Jesus Christ. Each claimed he had experienced a remarkable change in his life, which had occurred through contact with the risen Messiah.

Pinpointed in a precise time and place

The resurrection of Jesus Christ is an event in history which you can pinpoint in a definite time-space dimension. The fact of the resurrection is an historical matter.

The place is of geographical definiteness.
The tomb’s owner was a well-known man who lived in the first century.
The tomb was made out of rock and cut into in a hillside next to Jerusalem.
It was not composed of some mythical cloud-dust, but of a fixed, identifiable geographical location.
The guards stationed at the tomb were not aerial spirits from Mount Olympus.
The Sanhedrin was a council of men who met regularly in Jerusalem.
Jesus Himself, as a vast number of documents attest, was a living, physical man, who mixed with men and women publicly, in a space-time dimension of history.
The disciples who went out and announced He had risen were men among men. They worked, slept, ate, drank, suffered, died.

This is not a philosophical matter. This is an historical problem.

The resurrection of Jesus is not a matter of personal faith, it is matter of
a fact.

Would the evidence stand up in court?

If you went into court with the evidence presented in that book, how would you come out?

Just ask an attorney. Sir Edward Clark, K.C., wrote:

“As a lawyer, I have made a prolonged study of the evidences for the events of the [resurrection of Jesus]. To me the evidence is conclusive, and over and over again in the High Court, I have secured the verdict on evidence not nearly so compelling.” (Wilbur M.A. Smith, A Great Certainty in This Hour of World Crises. Wheaton: Van Kampen Press, 1951, p.14)

Professor Thomas Arnold, author of a famous three-volume History of Rome, who was appointed to the chair of Modern History at Oxford, stated concerning the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus:

“Thousands and tens of thousands of persons have gone through it piece by piece, as carefully as every judge summing up on a most important cause. I have myself done it many times over… I know of no one fact in the history of mankind which is proved by better and fuller evidence of every sort.” (Wilbur M.A. Smith, Therefore Stand: Christian Apologetics. Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1965, pp. 425,426)

And while you do the same – for yourself - would you please bear this in mind: the cause of much excessive unbelief stems not from a careful evaluation of the data, but from an enormous bias against the supernatural.

It was Benjamin Disraeli who said, “How much easier it is to be critical than to be correct.”

Since we cannot directly investigate the past we must depend on the observation records made by reliable witnesses who were there. One can believe in the resurrection of Christ because we have the records left by those who saw Him before his death, those who saw Him die and be buried, and who saw Him risen from the dead.

Thus, the conflict between Christianity and unbelief is not blind faith versus fact based science, but faith based on facts recorded by reliable witnesses who were there, versus faith in the speculations of skeptics who were not there.

Being convinced of Jesus’ resurrection from the grave is what started the whole Christian movement.

Nobody should believe a claim like that without good evidence. And the evidence for the resurrection of Jesus is not just good: it is compelling.

Did Jesus really die?

Some have objected that Jesus did not really die and that he later regained his strength and escaped from the tomb.

Well, what about it?

Just think it through. Firstly, Roman soldiers were professional executioners. That’s how they earned their living. Secondly, crucifixion was a slow, painful process, which brought on cramps and eventually prevented the victim from breathing. He suffocated to death. Thirdly, to be certain of Jesus’ death, the soldiers thrust a spear up into his chest cavity. The blood and water that escaped were evidence of heart failure – and that Jesus was truly dead.

But suppose he had not been dead. Consider a weakened man trying to push away a fixed stone barrier weighing several tons, from the inside. There is no doubt that Jesus was dead.

THEN...

* What happened to the body?
* Where are the bones of Jesus Christ?
* What really happened to Jesus after his death?

Would Jesus’ ENEMIES have moved the body?

Why would they?. They at last had him where they wanted him.

Could his FRIENDS have done it?

Think about this! They were utterly dispirited and ran away feeling they had followed a discredited leader who had been executed and had dashed all their hopes. Down to earth, every day men, they certainly did not expect his coming to life again. Every account in their memoirs shows their utter amazement and initial refusal to believe.

And even then, it was impossible for them to have penetrated the guard and entered the sealed tomb.

And if by some astonishing means they had done even this, there is another problem. These men would never have gone all over the world announcing his risen presence with such joy that people felt they might be drunk.. and then so persist in their story that prison, torture and death could not stop them.

You do not allow yourself to get killed for proclaiming a fraud!

There are some delightful supporting touches in the records. For example, John’s account tells of Peter and John racing each other to the tomb after they heard from the women that Jesus was alive. When they got there and stooped to look in, they noticed something very strange about the linen bandages that had been entwined with precious spices (a Jewish way of burial) and wrapped around Jesus’ body. The bandages were lying wrapped up in their original shape – but with no body inside. The men also saw the turban that had been around his head “not lying with the linen clothes, but rolled up in a place by itself”. When they saw this they believed. (John 20:7) Why? Because it was apparent to them that the body of Jesus had emerged from the grave-clothes, just as a butterfly emerges from its chrysalis. And the turban lay apart, just like the cap of the chrysalis after the butterfly has emerged.

The enemies of Jesus would not have removed the body? No motive. Jesus friends? They could not.

Who else, then? No one else was concerned enough to do it. Who stole the body? The simplest and most obvious answer is more likely to be the correct one. Was the tomb empty because God raised Jesus from its clutches?

Just think about that.

The empty tomb is not even the most important evidence that Jesus had conquered death. Christianity could not have been born without that event.

But there’s more, much more. Jesus appeared after his resurrection to large numbers of people. Paul, writing a mere 20 years after the event, recounted Jesus’ appearances in a variety of locations to fishermen who had followed him for three years, to a skeptical brother, to a fanatical Pharisaic opponent, and to 500 ordinary people And most of these witnesses were still alive when Paul wrote. (1 Corinthians 15:1-11) Pretty powerful evidence, is it not? Nobody, those early days, could refute it.
What really happened to Jesus after his death? He rose!

Local reaction an important indicator

Think about this. After the alleged resurrection of Jesus, here were the established religious leaders telling the people that Jesus’ body had been stolen. And there were Jesus’ disciples teaching and doing miracles in his name. The citizens of Jerusalem were forced to make a decision.

The Bible records the public reaction. With women and children factored in, it appears that perhaps as many as 15,000 residents of Jerusalem (about 15 percent of the population) became believers within days of the event. Such a change in religious orientation was unheard of. Especially when you realise that this was a monotheistic culture which would have difficulty in accepting the concept of Jesus also being God.

How to stop Christianity before it gets started

And if the whole thing were not true, all that the Jewish leaders had to do to destroy Christianity was to produce the body of Jesus. Why didn’t they?

However, I suggest to you that the most compelling proof of all is the way the lives of those first disciples were utterly transformed by their companionship with Jesus after his resurrection. Theirs is one of the greatest “comeback” stories in world history.

The resurrection of Jesus can claim legally the most watertight case on planet Earth.

If this be so, then Jesus’ resurrection validates his claim that he has set a time to raise the dead and take over dominion of this world.

The resurrection is solid evidence that Jesus is who he said he was – God in human flesh - and that his words are true.

He had prophesied that he would be killed and then rise again in three days. And his prophecy was fulfilled.

And, because he is alive, one can know him and enjoy him now in this life - and be confident that in the future one is assured of eternal life. Jesus not only promises eternal life in an earth made new, but he validates that promise through his resurrection from the dead.

And that is something Confucius, Muhammad, Socrates and the others could not do. Doesn’t that make Jesus rather special?

A young girl in the park opened her lunch, And, as children with an innocent trust in God are often known to do, closed her eyes to pray.

A learned man sitting opposite, taunted her, “My poor little girl, you don’t know in whom you believe. There are many christs. How do you know which one is real?”

“Oh, I know which one I believe in,” she said. “I believe in the Christ who arose from the dead.”

The death barrier has been broken. There is light on the other side.

A minister was addressing a group of working men on the topic of “Jesus Christ, the Light of the world.” He was explaining how Jesus had brought so much enlightenment into a world of darkness… and how this light illuminated even the “valley of the shadow of death”.

A skeptic interrupted him. “That’s all nonsense,” he said. “Electricity has done more to enlighten the world than Jesus Christ.”

“Well, then,” replied the minister, “when you are dying, be sure to send for the electrician.”
